Hominy has a fantasy of giving his seat up to a white woman, so the narrator places signs on the seats in the front of the bus announcing they are for whites only and hires a sex worker to board the bus so Hominy can give up his seat to her. To celebrate Hominy’s birthday, the narrator arranges to hold a party for him on Marpessa’s bus. Finally, the narrator agrees to take Hominy as a slave. Hominy wishes to become the narrator’s slave at first, the narrator laughs at this and tries to ignore it, but Hominy is surprisingly determined. He also encounters one of his neighbors, the elderly Hominy, who is also upset about Dickens being removed from the maps. The narrator hears from a woman he dated in college, Marpessa, who works as a city bus driver. Attending a meeting of his father’s old friends to announce his plan and gain their support, he gets into an argument about removing racial epithets from classic literature with their leader, Foy Chesire. He campaigns to get his town put back on the map. One day, the narrator discovers that Dickens has been removed from maps as part of an effort to raise property values in surrounding areas.

He is not excited about doing this but does it anyway. As a result, the narrator inherits the house and land that his father owned he finds that he is expected to also take on the role of talking residents out of bad ideas, something his father was known for. The narrator’s father is shot and killed by police officers as he confronts them, shouting during an arrest. However, despite this upbringing, the narrator doesn’t believe racism is much of a problem in the modern world, although he does remember one incident where he believes he was charged a different price for a soda simply because of his skin color. Believing the whole world is essentially racist, his father home-schooled his son. He believes his father saw him as an experiment instead of a person, often exposing his son to racial epithets and conservative white political rhetoric long before the boy could comprehend. He tells the story of how he ended up here. He has been charged with holding slaves and attempting to bring back racial segregation. the United States of America because his last name is Me. prior to his court date, then mentions that his case is Me vs. He reflects on his day of tourism in Washington D.C. The book opens with a prologue in which the narrator claims he has never stolen anything, which he believes might surprise the reader because he is a black man, before revealing he is handcuffed and in the Supreme Court of the United States. Considered satirical despite the author’s denials, The Sellout (2015), a novel by Paul Beatty, explores modern issues of race and racism through a shocking and often comical premise.
